New research reveals 70% of Brits find it easier to help others than to talk about their own problems. Brits may be quick to offer a helping hand, but when it comes to admitting we need one ourselves, it’s a very different story.
To help, we’ve been working with comedian and broadcaster Judi Love to front a new campaign for British Gas, encouraging the public to Pass It On. To share useful advice and information with those they care about, rather than relying on people to ask for help.
Our key findings include:
- – 60% would find it difficult to tell friends or family if they were struggling financially
- – 58% worry they would be judged
- – Nearly a quarter (23%) would worry about offending someone by suggesting financial support
- – Yet just 2% say they would actually feel offended if a friend or family member passed on information they thought could help
- – In fact, almost two-thirds (63%) would feel grateful, pleased, relieved or comfortable receiving it.
As part of the campaign, we’ve worked with Judi to create Judi Love’s Guide to Life – five lessons she’s picked up along the way, including how she dealt with her own experiences of financial hardship. She’ll also be encouraging people to pass on the advice and information that has helped them.
