Each week, PR Week asks a hand-picked section of industry experts a burning question. This week, the focus was on working in specialist areas of PR. More specifically, what steps does someone need to take if they wanted to make such a move?
PR Week questioned experts leading in healthcare, public affairs, tech and internal comms, and for the latter, they turned to Jo Singleton, our Internal Communications Director and leader of our internal comms practice, Ingage.
Here’s a sneak peek from Jo’s thoughts…
“A strong grounding across disciplines gives you transferable skills and perspective – and you can always choose to build out a specialism over time. Crucially, you keep the flexibility to pivot if you want to, so don’t be afraid to try new things, learn new skills and not settle for being pigeonholed.
“In internal comms, I’ve found that bringing in perspectives from journalism and marketing has given me fresh angles and credibility with stakeholders. The real value lies in recognising the crossover: listening, storytelling, influencing and translating complex issues into clear narratives. These skills cut across sectors and disciplines, and they’ll serve you well whether you double down into a specialism or keep your path broad.”
